What is it about?

Next to an extended Introduction, the “Berlin Coptic Book” is a transcription of a Coptic text with its German translation. This fourth century manuscript itself is a translation of a second century Greek text. It was restored from about 3000 papyrus fragments that belong to the Papyrus Collection of the Berlin Egyptian Museum.

Why is it important?

After the endless task of assembling the fragments into fragmentary leaves, the document can now be identified as a rather early theological treatise that points to a school of thought in the vicinity of Alexandria--from Philo to Plotinus. Therefore it is not only interesting to theologians but also of extreme importance for Patristic scholars.
