What is it about?
Plasma chitotriosidase (ChT) activity is associated with the presence of atherosclerosis and is a new cardiovascular risk marker. Although available evidence supports its role in atherogenesis, there is a lack of an obvious correlation between plasma ChT activity and erectile dysfunction (ED).

Why is it important?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects millions of men and their quality of life. There is a negative association between self-perceived ED and health-related quality of life. In epidemiologic studies, prevalence of ED varies markedly, ranging from 20% to 90%, depending on the population studied and choice of assessment tools
Perspectives
For the first time, elevated plasma ChT activity in patients with arteriogenic ED is demonstrated. Clinical trials are needed to assess whether enzyme replacement therapy will restore normal erectile function in ED patients with elevated plasma ChT activity. Also our findings require further confirmation in other studies.
