In this review we summarize our understanding (by 2011) of helical membrane protein integration at the endoplasmic reticulum, and highlight specific characteristics that affect the biogenesis (targeting, insertion and folding) of membrane proteins

Perspectives
We highlighted the central role of the translocon but extending it to the main translocon-associated protein components. In addition, we emphasize the requirements of the transmembrane domains to be recognized by the translocon.
