What is it about?

Healing after surgery is often compromised due to poor blood circulation and low metabolism. We have shown for the first time that mechanical therapy by intermittent pneumatic compression of the calf after Achilles tendon rupture surgery can improve the healing process by enhancing the metabolism and circulation.

Why is it important?

Our findings demonstrate that the healing processes in areas with poor circulation and low metabolism can be improved by using external mechanical compression technology.

Perspectives

I think this area of technology will be boost as the aging population increases in combination with the increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus. We will have to find new means of improving healing in case of reduced circulation and low metabolism.
