Why is it important?

The results of this study demonstrate that human fibrocytes exhibit extracellular matrix remodeling properties previously unexplored, including the ability to participate in collagen turnover. The observed differences between fibrocytes and fibroblasts, particularly in terms of level of expression of collagens and proteoglycans, suggest that fibrocytes may predominantly have a matrix-stabilizing function.
