This paper explores the challenges faced by psychotherapists and counselors in making counseling work as a practice of coping. This paper is about the cultural assumptions underlying counseling and psychotherapy.

Why is it important?

Despite being offered as a panacea for lots of global mental health problems, this article shows how the assumptions underlying counseling, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, are deeply cultural. It shows how these practices are translated and localized in specific settings.

This paper won the Cordon Prize in Psychological Anthropology by the American Anthropological Association.
