What is it about?
We tested the sensitivity and specificity of HemoCue 201+ and micro‐Hct methods in women candidates for blood donation, the group most commonly deferred for anemia, using an automated hematology analyzer as the standard reference for hemoglobin concentration.

Why is it important?
Evaluating donor hemoglobin level is an important step in donor selection to prevent collection of blood from an anemic donor.
Perspectives
The portable hemoglobinometer HemoCue 201+ showed greater discriminating power for detecting anemia in prospective blood donors compared to the micro‐Hct method. Our data are important to determine which instrument would best preserve the safety requirements of both donor and recipient, without rejecting healthy donors.
