Archaeologists regularly use coins to date their archaeological contexts and sites, but do not necessarily appreciate the complexities of both the dating of the artifacts, and the implications for the dating of their sites.

Dating is fundamental to the archaeological enterprise. This paper looks at these issues via a series of archaeological case studies, mainly focused on Roman period sites.
