What is it about?

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 4th International Conference on Language Variation in Europe (ICLaVE 4) held at the University of Cyprus in 2007. The papers adopt a number of theoretical frameworks including Generative Grammar, Word Grammar, Government Phonology, Optimality Theory, Variation Linguistics etc. and cover a variety of languages and language varieties: Spanish, European and South American Brazilian, Standard Dutch, the Flemish dialects, Standard and Cypriot Greek, Bernese and Valais Swiss German, Austrian German, British English, Newcastle and Tyneside English, several German dialects (Alemanic, Swabian, South Franconian) etc. Methodological accuracy, data collection and data analysis are some of the issues dealt with in these papers.

Why is it important?

The volume presents a variety of approaches on the same theme: language variation, thus giving the reader the opportunity to evaluate how each approach contributes (or not) to a better understanding of the phenomenon of language variation.
