What is it about?

The paper outlines the concept of a moral dilemma, summarises problems with modern (post-enlightenment) ethical theories, considers the 'intellectual virtues' in Aristotle, before introducing Ross's theory of prima facie duties as an approach to dilemma resolution. Comment is also offered on connections with Hare's moral thinking and on the use of case material and other pedagogical matters.

Why is it important?

There has been criticism of the use of modern ethical theories such as Kant and utilitarianism in the context of business and organizational ethics. Ross offers the basis for an alternative, without the more extreme position of the post modern theorists.

Perspectives

Ross wrote in the 1930s and his work was dismissed and largely overlooked thereafter. This and other work by the author is an attempt at resurrecting Ross's conribution in the context of organizational ethics.
