This paper explains how staff, in an inclusive and high achieving secondary school, developed new understandings of how to manage student behaviour so that both staff and students gained educational benefits.

Why is it important?

This paper is important as it addresses the issues of student discipline, inclusion and professionalism in a high stakes secondary school context. How do you increase achievement and be inclusive?

Perspectives

For me this paper was about showing how inclusive values (that Booth and Ainscow stuff) was bought to life in a complex and now high achieving secondary school. I am a New Zealander and inclusive education, social justice and equity values are important to me. So how did the staff in an English school solve the dilemma of 'pupil discipline' and achievement? This school became a high achieving school in the context of Excellence in Cities and is one of a large number of examples of schools, under the various policies, worked professionally and collegially to work towards this difficult problem.
