Why is it important?

In Venezuela the Antillean manatees population is endangered by hunting, illegal traffic, and accidental fischery entaglements, given the importance of the rescue and rehabilitation of confiscated manatees.

Perspectives

In Venezuela there are no currently research projects with Antillean manatee, so that it is very important that we publish our data from the last 20 years and achieve even perform basic research projects, in situ and ex situ. Surveys and research must be implemented again in the near future to have updated data on the population status of Trichechus manatus manatus in this country. This publication provides current and recent historical data on conservation programs of rehabilitation and captive breeding, the first that has started with manatees from the Maracaibo Lake and Orinoco River Basins.
