What is it about?

An increasing number of students with lived experience of mental illness are joining the mental health nursing training. It’s important to understand how they manage the demands of their programme as these students face some additional challenges which have not well explored previously.

Why is it important?

Our findings shows that most of these students choose not to disclose their mental health conditions until they become unwell on the programme due to mostly internalised stigma and fear of discrimination. The student support mechanism needs bolstering to better support these students including embedding students resilience in the nurse training programme. How Lived experience is managed in their practice including use of self disclosure and effective strategies are not well covered in their programme.

Perspectives

These students will be part of the future mental health workforce and hence should be better supported and equipped to be ready to influence and shaped a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
