What is it about?
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is impacted by outdoor air in naturally ventilated schools especially in places where both anthropogenic and natural sources of ambient air pollution exist. Students' health and academic performance can be affected under poor indoor environmental conditions. Our research considered the impact of periodic dust storms on the IAQ and comfort characteristics of five different schools during an entire school year.

Why is it important?
The findings suggest that mechanical ventilation retrofitting with particle filtration is needed to mitigate potential adverse health consequences on children. Single paned and heat/noise permeable windows may also impact academic performance, especially in schools near roads and construction areas. Mechanical ventilation is essential in schools but becomes more critical in dusty regions.
Perspectives
Writing this article was essential in gathering and getting to know the different research groups on common ground with taking measures to improve the air quality for our fragile children in schools, where they spend the second most time after their homes. I hope that children will reach a healthier and more comfortable environment as this article raises universal awareness.
