What is it about?

A study of Syrian refugees migrating from Jordan and Turkey, through the Balkans, and into the E.U. found that border and migration policies have increased the risk of migrating for refugees, with little impact on the smugglers and traffickers those policies are officially targeting.

Why is it important?

This article fills a research gap of local or meso-level analysis through all of the countries along the Balkans migration route. The study also benefits from unique data with breadth, depth and texture from a large number of in depth interviews with Syrian refugees during transit.
