What is it about?

Many migrants have travelled trough the Western Balkans in 2015 to seek protection or new life in the West. While the EU wants them to apply for asylum in the Balkans, the migrants don't have such intention. Neither do the countries they are transiting.

Why is it important?

The article will help understand why the migrants only cross the Western Balkans, why the EU want them to stay there and why this is not happening. It is timely as it has been written during and immediately after the 2015/16 refugee crisis has been taking place.

Perspectives

The article is a result of many years and months of my work in the field of asylum, and the result of my analysis of the relationship between the EU and the Western Balkans. Being an asylum law researcher from Slovenia, I have a unique perspective to observe the developments in both regions. Talking to dozens of state officials gave me quite a few good insights into what's going on.
