What is it about?

The paper examines whether being in a lower occupational position than aspired to increases the risk of becoming unemployed. The idea is that when the job and the expectations do not meet, unemployment may be seen as a way out of the situation.

Why is it important?

Most explananations for individual risk for unemployment have focused on personal factors, such as education and mental health. In contrast, this paper examines wether a discrepancy between peoples expectations to work-status ant the actual situation increase the risk of becoming unemployed. The findings imply that understanding peoples subjective expectations to work may be important when studying unemployment.
