What is it about?

The article brings attention to a big issue for many college students- access to healthy food in reasonable amounts. By exploring both financial and food management skills in the context of available resources, the study highlights factors that are associated with food security status as well as the prevalence of this problem within a university sample.

Why is it important?

Roughly 14% of the present sample reported being food insecure to some extent. This is a significant problem that university administrators should be aware of, as assistance programs may be warranted that target student populations who are less likely to be considered in need of supports.

Perspectives

As a researcher interested in consumer financial decision-making, I was fascinated to explore this area of research with colleagues who are experts in human nutrition. To me, this work is indicative of the interesting stories that develop out of cross-disciplinary collaborations, and I hope that this work, and further work like it, can help inform the process of ensuring food security for as many individuals as possible.
