What is it about?

We identified clinical trials comparing non medicated lozenges with lozenges containing cresol in patients suffering from sore throat. Patients sucking medicated lozenges and lozenges containing cresol reported pain relief. However the difference albeit statistically significant is probably to small to be appreciated.

Why is it important?

It proves that sucking non medicated lozenges is nearly as effective relieving pain from sore throat than one bought in pharmacy.

Perspectives

We have reviewed ambroxol a view year ago showing similar results. Many people with sore throat put pressure on their doctors for antibiotic prescription when they are actually looking for pain relief. Antibiotics do not help against pain, but sucking lozenges will increase salivation and provide pain relief. If you have other symptoms like fever or arthralgia paracetamol / acetaminophen might be a better option.
