What is it about?

Glass is a known fragile material. Its strength is dominated by surface flaws population. The increase of glass strength is critical in structural uses like consumer electronics, transportations and architecture. Here is presented a mathematical model of the mechanism of strength increase by Ion Exchange. Calculated strength results are compared with measured ones.

Why is it important?

A new equation is presented that exhibits advantages in the computational approach. It is proposed and justified the modification of the surface flaws geometry as a consequence of residual stress introduced by Ion Exchange. Some former simplified strength calculation approaches are critically discussed and their limitations are clearly indicated.

Perspectives

Mathematical models may help in improve our understanding of the physics and chemistry involved in this process that I believe is not yet totally clarified. Explorations and improvements are to be expected making physical parameters no more constant but variables and playing with boundary conditions. The followed approach is purely classical in the sense of physical-mathematical methods. Another potential perspective can be a more fundamental one, maybe based on structure of matter approaches. Finally I hope this article is thought-provoking.
