What is it about?

Lu2O3-ZrO2 has been researched for its thermal resistance and transparency but, it's still not well reported system. We fabricated Lu2O3-ZrO2 then investigated its basic structure and Vickers hardness and explain the results in comparison with well known Y2O3-doped ZrO2.

Why is it important?

This is the first time that the mechanical properties (and also phase as we know) of Lu2O3-doped ZrO2 samples have been investigated experimentally.

Perspectives

Lu2O3-doped ZrO2 could be useful ceramics for further utility. Lu 3+ ion has high electrical field strength like Sc 3+ ion but also has enogh size to make ZrO2 sustain its useful structure (high-temperature phase). This article confirms the similarity on structure between two 3+ ion doped ZrO2 and possible interesting phenomena presumed as effect of high field strength start with unexpected Vickers hardness curve shown here.
