What is it about?

Joan Acker, esteemed scholar and activist, tells about her development as a critical sociologist who called into question assumptions about gender in all aspects of social life, particularly in relation to work and organizations. Pat Martin lets Joan speak for herself and then adds assessments of her own and of others.

Why is it important?

Feminist sociologists have forced sociology to change from its comfortable position of nearly all-white men to embracing women and people of color. Joan Acker's scholarship illuminates the organizational dynamics that contribute not only to inequality AT WORK but economic, social, cultural and political gender inequality in society.

Perspectives

I urge all sociologists of organizations to read and learn from the life work of Joan Robinson Acker. We lost a visionary and heroine when she passed away.
