What is it about?

Entrepreneurism is widely regarded as being one way in which women can avoid sexism in the workplace and operate on a level playing field. Contrary to this widespread view our research with female entrepreneurs revealed many examples of sexism. However, our analyses reveals that this was not evaluated as sexism-in-action because the female entrepreneurs enact a postfeminist and neoliberal Discourse of freedom, autonomy, and choice, rather than a feminist Discourse of discrimination and sexism.

Why is it important?

This paper has sought to add to research that seeks to challenge the assumption that the entrepreneurial world is a level playing field for women. Specifically, we add to this debate by explicating the process through which female entrepreneurs do not evaluate experiences of men not talking to them as sexism-in-action.

Perspectives

Writing this article was important to me. As a woman I too have experienced sexism during my life and career. I want to make it easier for others to talk about their gendered experiences and challenge sexism in all areas of work and life. I hope readers will find the way this paper 'reveals' sexism in action thought provoking. Ultimately, I think the paper highlights that sexism is an issue that affects all of us and I hope that men, not just women, read the paper and learn from it.
