What is it about?

This article is the nexus of my PhD gender and ethnicity research. The article focuses on gender privilege and penalty, building upon the findings of my most cited publication “A woman’s place in hotel management: upstairs or downstairs” (Mooney & Ryan, 2009) by looking at the intersections of ethnicity overlaid on the intersections of age and gender I had written about in the past.

Why is it important?

It shows that essentially, nothing has changed since our 2009 article about career barriers experienced by women managers in hotels. Women are still judged by a different, more favorable, standard to men.

Perspectives

To me, this is the most significant publication from my doctoral study into why people work long term in hospitality. It shows that gendered perceptions profoundly alter career outcomes for women, not solely women's career decisions.
