What is it about?

In Japan, the aging rate per annum is expected to reach about 30% by 2025. This study aims to develop an end-of-life care management (EOLCM) scale to assess community-based integrated care for older adults who wish to remain at home until end-of-life and examine its reliability and validity.

Why is it important?

Exploratory factor analyses identified 23 items from four factors: “further the teamwork to realize the individual’s wishes,” “rapid care planning that anticipates changes in the situation,” and so on. The scale showed acceptable internal consistency and concurrent validity. Care managers’ use of this scale might improve quality of care management and fulfill older adults’ wishes to remain at home during the end-of-life period.

Perspectives

I hoped that this article will help medical, social care and nursing professionals to support older adults in their communities. We hope that this article is thought-provoking with regard to enabling older people to live the life they want in their community.
