What is it about?

This research discussed ecumenism as relational an relational enterprise. It proposes an understanding of ecumenism as being about the love of the triune God and the way in which denominations embody love in ecclesial and ecumenical structures. The research describes how that this particular kind of ecumenism changed the mind and heart of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in South Africa and paved the way for deeper ecumenical engagement.

Why is it important?

The research bases ecumenism in a relational understanding of the Trinity, and applies this to the ecumenical history of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in South Africa. It positions the DRC in terms of important ecumenical events in the early 21st century.

Perspectives

The idea of relational ecumenism is also present in two important ecumenical declarations of the World Council of Churches (WCC) – The Church: Towards a Common Vision (TCV), and Together towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes (TTL).
