What is it about?
This is a broad review written in three connected parts about the state of Africa's soils. The first part lays out the main problems eating away at soil health across the continent: erosion, desertification, nutrient imbalances, acidity, salt buildup, deforestation, and compaction. The second part traces what these problems actually cost, both for agriculture and for people, including lost farmland and biodiversity, rising greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient-poor soils that can't support good yields, and knock on effects on human nutrition and health. The third part shifts to solutions, drawing on approaches like agroforestry and afforestation to point toward practical paths forward. The paper is illustrated with real world examples across the continent, from soil compaction in Cameroon to poor moisture soils in Namibia to farmland degradation in Mozambique, drawing on the authors' own Soils4Africa field database as well as published data on soil pH and groundwater quality.
