What is it about?

It is about cells in striatum (a central area of brain) that are overactive in Parkinson's disease and might be involved in the symptom generation. The anatomy is very complex and we tried to describe it in detail

Why is it important?

Blocking the action of these cells with drugs was the first treatment of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. We have better treatments, but we still do not understand the reason for the changed activity of cholinergic cells in the disease. This summary of their connections might help.

Perspectives

I was disappointed that we had no experiments to add to the International Basal Ganglia Society issue of the European Journal of Neuroscience but this and the thalamic review seemed like a way to be part of the volume.
