What is it about?

On the site of brain injury a fibrotic scar is formed. We have cultured hippocampal neurons on a model of fibrotic scar. Excitability of thise neurons was enhanced - they fired more action potentials, almplitudes of sodium and potassium currents were increased. TGF-beta1 is a cytokine which is expressed around the fibrotic scar. When TGB-beta1 was added to hippocampal neurons cultured withiut fibrotic scar, they fired less action potentials and amplitude of sodium current decreased. Therefore, effect of fibrotic scar on hippocampal excitability is not mediated by an increased expression of TGF-beta1.
