What is it about?

In this manuscript we show that the use of temporary pools by fish may reduce the temporal variation in the structure of fish fauna in Amazonian headwater streams.

Why is it important?

This results bring a new insight about the importance of small temporary habitats in maintaining the stability of biodiversity in running water ecosystems.

Perspectives

In my point of view this manuscript is a great contribution to freshwater ecology, once it shows through fine-scale quantitative data that seasonal movement of fish between permanent and temporary habitats is much more than a vital process for individuals and species. It is a way to buffer temporary changes in overall assemblage structure and help to maintain biodiversity in headwaters.
