What is it about?
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are important root symbionts colonising almost all land plants. These fungi can have large impacts on plant performance and ecosystem function. Here we showed that how plants and the insects eating the plants respond to the symbiotic fungi depends on their genetic background - some families of plants and insects will perform better with the mycorrhizal fungi while other families will perform worse.

Why is it important?
It is important to realise that the response of plants and insects to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is variable - showing that the fungi can be both mutualistic and antagonistic to plants and herbivores.
