What is it about?
This study shows teledentistry reliably assesses traumatic dental injuries using smartphone photos. Remote evaluations by pediatric dentists matched in-person exams with clinical data. Three photo views suffice, supporting low-cost emergency care in underserved areas.

Why is it important?
This study is relevant because it recognizes traumatic dental injuries as a public health issue that requires immediate care to improve prognosis and reduce treatment costs. Teledentistry emerges as a strategic solution by overcoming geographic barriers, accelerating clinical decision-making, validating smartphone use in real-life conditions, and addressing an existing demand in dental practice. In addition, it provides scientific support, diagnostic accuracy comparable to in-person examinations, and legal support through digital documentation.
Perspectives
This study points to a transformation in the management of dental emergencies through teledentistry. The technology has the potential to overcome geographic and structural barriers, accelerate diagnosis, enable layperson participation in initial triage, improve clinical protocols, strengthen legal documentation, reduce costs, and promote early interventions with better clinical outcomes.
