I track how companies expand into foreign markets. I find that they open affiliates in large markets first and use them to expand to smaller, nearby markets.

Why is it important?
Our knowledge of how companies expand into foreign markets has been limited by poor data. I use previously unused data on a new industry that was a major exporter, the motion picture industry in the 1920s.
