What is it about?
The COVID-19 pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. To slow the spread of the virus, restrictive measures were implemented worldwide. This real-world study found that during the full lockdown, HbA1c testing—a key indicator of diabetes management—dropped by half across all age and gender groups. However, among those who continued testing and presumably maintained clinical contact, glycaemic control remained unaffected.

Why is it important?
Lockdown measures affected large numbers of individuals with diabetes worldwide. Older adults, who were harder to reach through telemedicine, appeared to be the most impacted by the negative effects of lockdown on diabetes care.
Perspectives
Special attention should be given to older and more vulnerable individuals, as well as to those who are less familiar with digital technologies. Local healthcare protocols should be adapted to address the needs of these groups in the event of future restrictive measures.
