What is it about?

We propose a Doppler echocardiographic algorithm for a fast estimation of pulmonary wedge pressure (an approximation of left ventricular filling pressure). The algorithm shows higher accuracy than the ASE-EACVI algorithm in patients with both normal and decreased left ventricular systolic function, and allows the estimation of left ventricular filling pressure also in situations where the ASE-EACVI 2016 recommendations are not feasible (for example: mitral valve disease/valvuloplasty/prosthesis, arrhythmias).

Why is it important?

The proposed algorithm allows a faster assessment of left ventricular filling pressure than the ASE-EACVI 2016 recommendations, and is applicable to a wider patient population. It can be used in parallel with current diastology Guidelines to assess both left ventricular filling pressure and diastolic function class.
