What is it about?
One of the first RCTs to show metabolic effects in detail following per oral administration of L reuteri DSM 17938 or placebo in type 2 diabetes patients. Diversity of gut microbiota may play a for getting a positive effect on metabolic control after L reuteri DSM 17938.

Why is it important?
This study shows that the metabolic response can vary considerably in type 2 diabetes patients following probiotic treatment. Our results suggest that it is important to know the gut microbiota composition to predict whether there will be a positive metabolic effect after L reuteri DSM 17938.
Perspectives
Larger randomized clinical trials using Lactobacillus strains are needed to better understand if positive metabolic long term effects may be achieved in human subjects.
