What is it about?
Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is extremely useful for diagnosing the lesions of the testis and surrounding tissues. It is comparable to biopsy findings in most of the cases. FNAC confirms the non-neoplastic nature of most lesions of the testis and helps in patient management avoiding unnecessary surgical intervention.

Why is it important?
Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is extremely useful for diagnosing many lesions of the body without the need for surgical intervention. FNAC can be performed in the outpatient department with minimal inconvenience to the patients and is cost effective also. It may be especially important in case of testicular lesions and other surrounding masses in paratesticular region as it correlates positively with the biopsy findings.
Perspectives
In the present study, FNAC proved to be a useful diagnostic modality for testicular and paratesticular mass lesions due to its high sensitivity and specificity in discriminating between inflammatory, benign and malignant lesions, high concordance rates with histopathological diagnosis, rapidity of diagnosis, ease of performance and no complication. The overall concordance of FNAC with histopathology was 100% with a sensitivity and specificity of 100%. So it is highly recommended to include the FNAC as the first line of investigation in case testicular and paratesticular lesions.
