Why is it important?

Screening for BK viremia is well established in kidney transplant recipients, and pre-emptive reduction of immunosuppression has been shown to prevent the development of BK virus nephropathy and improve outcomes in these patients. However, much less data is available on the outcomes of pre-emptive reduction of immunosuppression in recipients of simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation. We aimed to evaluate the impact of pre-emptive reduction of immunosuppression on BK viral loads, as well as pancreas and kidney allograft outcomes.
