This paper analysed multicentre data of patients who underwent colostomy reversal over a 15-year period in an environment with extremely low patient migration.

Why is it important?
High variability exists in the rates and timings of stoma reversal for different indications for the index colostomy creation surgery. Patients who were discharged home at the time of stoma creation were associated with a higher probability of stoma reversal operation, whereas older age, malignant disease, and history of cardiovascular and psycho-neurologic diseases were independently associated with a lower incidence of colostomy reversal.
Perspectives
Our findings provided a new perspective on the predictive factors for colostomy reversal, allowing realistic expectations for both surgeons and patients during the shared decision-making process.
