What is it about?

Contamination of the personal products with another allergen is an important problem in patch testing with patients' own material. We have recently suggested a practical method to solve this problem: patch testing with used and unused personal products at the same time.

Why is it important?

It is important to avoid false positive patch test reactions with personal products and not to miss the real, probably not yet tested, allergen.

Perspectives

Patch testing with the patient's own material may sometimes result in false positive reactions, if there is a retained allergen in the material that is the real cause of allergic contact dermatitis. If chemical analysis is not available, patch testing with both used and unused products of exactly the same brand and batch might be a practical approach: a positive patch test result with the used material and a negative patch test with the unused material would indicate contamination with topically applied and absorbed allergens.
