What is it about?

Phylogenetic relationships in the tribe recovered from five plastid regions tested previous taxonomies for the tribe and provided the first guide to the recognition of a natural sub-tribal taxonomy.

Why is it important?

Cylindropuntia and Grusonia are two important genera mainly distributed in the North American deserts and show geographic distribution patterns that are coherent with an allopatric mode of speciation.

Perspectives

This paper is the first phylogenetic approach to the recognition of a natural tribe and tested the limits of previous taxonomic proposals for the majority of the species of the group.
