What is it about?

The human skin is prone to develop a number of pigmentation disorders caused by many factors (UV radiation, old age, etc). These appear as small regions on the body, usually darker but also lighter spots, of irregular shape. In this paper we present a model to create and render such skin lesions. The model takes into account he developmental processes involved in the pigmentation process.

Why is it important?

As the field of computer graphics matures, we need to pay more attention to the various natural visual phenomena that make us look as we look, down to the small details. Our model helps virtual human characters look more realistic.

Perspectives

There is an idiom: "The devil is in the details", meaning that paying attention to details is time consuming but also very important. As we move computer graphics closer to the photographic realism, we need to start paying attention to small details that make our world look as it looks.
