What is it about?

This article discusses a child-led research program that was trialed in an Australian non-government organisation. It worked with 10 children and young people, supporting them to research a topic of their choice, from design to dissemination.

Why is it important?

The program was independently evaluated and indicated a range of outcomes for the children and young people in terms or their skills and sense of well-being. The program has a implications for the use of research within a welfare context to meet the needs of children and young people living in disadvantaged communities.

Perspectives

The article addresses the real mechanics of implementing research with children and young people, including the challenges. There is a lot to learn from the aspects of a program that don't work as well or that produce unexpected outcomes. Research in the welfare context is a new hybrid and the use of research within this sector needs much more consideration.
