Why is it important?

There are many ways that diabetes can reduce tear stability. This report shows that more attention should be focused on these patients.

Perspectives

Diabetes can affect corneal epithelial basement membrane directly through biochemical and glycosylation of BM components. But it can also affect health of the sensory corneal nerves. This can result in poorer healing of the epithelial cells (lack of trophic support) and also reduced tear secretion.
