What is it about?

This paper describes how patients with a rare endocrine disease (hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism / Kallmann syndrome) struggle to cope with this condition and the difficulties they have sticking with treatment. It is intended to raise awareness of the challenges that patients face with the aim of developing more patient-centered approaches to care.

Why is it important?

Despite the available treatment options for patients with this rare disease, patients often have difficulty adhering to long-term treatment. Poor adherence can have a dramatic impact on health and wellbeing.

Perspectives

Unfortunately the struggles of patients with this rare condition are often overlooked. Patients have negative illness perceptions, increased depressive symptoms and difficulty coping with this rare condition. A more patient-centered approach could help improve quality of life for these patients.
