What is it about?

This article looks at the work of Sri Lankan refugee and Western pop star M.I.A. as a collection of globalized media texts. These texts, I argue, work artistically to create a comprehensive and coherent critique of state violence that is made all the more relevant by the systems of distribution, production, and cultural exchange that allow her work to circulate.

Why is it important?

Terrorism and violence is one of the key problematics of our time and by looking at how it is made sensible through popular culture, we can begin to imagine new ways of wrestling with that violence and critiquing it.
