What is it about?

The evolution of the Orphan Basin offshore Newfoundland margin. It investigate the relationship between pre-rift lithosphere thickness and rheology and rifting style.

Why is it important?

The novelty of this work is the fact the it propose a thicker pre-rift crust and mantle lithosphere to explain the tectonic and thermal evolution of observed in the highly thinned Orphan Rift Basin.

Perspectives

We need to be more careful when building models for the evolution of rifted margins and sedimentary basins in general. The initial lithosphere is usually assumed to be homogeneous and balanced. However, the inherited thickness variations and rheological heterogeneities play a primary role during deformation.
