What is it about?

Modelling neurological diseases provides possibilities to understand their mechanisms. We exposed larval zebrafish to valproic acid, which in humans causes autism spectrum disorder. In exposed zebrafish abnormal social behavior was observed. It was associated with abnormally low expression of histamine receptors and low numbers of histaminergic neurons. These findings suggest that histaminergic mechanisms may play roles in autism.
