What is it about?

The emerging macrolide resistance and the safety issue problems associated with the last generation of this antibiotic family had limited their therapeutic use as well, as the research for development of novel macrolides with improved antimicrobial effects. Fortunately, last year were published two outstanding papers, one dealing with a simple chemical method for the success synthesis of huge new macrolides molecules and the second with the answer to overcome their serious side effects. Therefore, macrolides came back in the forefront of science and new effective and safe antibiotics are expected very soon to re-enter the market.
