What is it about?

Chronic pain is commonly treated with opioids. However, the persistent use of opioids over time can lead to negative consequences such as the development of physical dependence, and even addiction. This is particularly problematic for chronic pain patients with a prior history of opioid abuse. It is critically important to characterize the brain mechanisms underlying pain's affect on opioid misuse (and vice versa) in order to effectively eliminate the opioid overdose epidemic.
